6 Ways Brands Are Celebrating International Women’s Day

From a new line of Barbie dolls to a Frida Kahlo exhibition, organizations the world over are finding creative ways to engage consumers in recognizing women

International Women’s Day is today, marking a particularly celebratory moment in Women’s History Month.  In addition to trending feminist hashtags like #PressForProgress and #SheInspiresMe, plenty of brands and institutions have created special products, programs and campaigns to mark the day and give people opportunities to support the idea. Here are a few that have grabbed our attention so far:

Barbie Dolls That Represent Influential Women, Past And Present

Barbie has had a somewhat contentious track record concerning the influence of its dolls on girls. However, toy manufacturer Mattel released a line of dolls modeled after historical and contemporary women just in time for Women’s Day, hoping to inspire and encourage girls to follow their passions and contribute to society.

Comprising two lines, “Inspiring Women” and “Sheros,” the collection includes female aviator Amelia Earhart, Mexican artist and activist Frida Kahlo, mathematics pioneer Katherine Johnson and snowboarder Chloe Kim dolls, covering quite a range of periods and fields.

Rachel Roy’s Capsule ‘Love’ Collection Encourages Compassion

Complementing her appointment as a UN Women Champion for Innovation, designer Rachel Roy is set to launch a mini collection called Love that includes denim shirts, Army-inspired anoraks, denim jackets, faux fur, scarves and T-shirts.

The theme of the capsule is Roy’s mission to encourage compassion and promote women’s success in work and leadership roles. Half of all proceeds from the line will support the movements Time’s Up and Everytown for Gun Safety.

The London Evening Standard Educates Listeners On Forgotten Heroines And Influential Women Of Today

The London Evening Standard is celebrating Women’s History Month this March by dedicating space specifically to female figures from yesterday and today, such as its recent coverage of lost soprano Nancy Storace, a muse of Mozart whose vocal skills are often forgotten, and the little-known female composer Louise Farrenc, a 19th-century French contemporary of Beethoven.

Net-a-Porter’s Collaboration With Women For Women International

The online luxury retailer teamed up with various designers and celebrities to launch a capsule range of T-shirts featuring encouraging slogans like “Thanks girls,” Love for you” and “Do it for Grandma.”

The designers enlisted for the project include Ganni, Off White, Rosie Assoulin, Chloé, Stella McCartney and Bella Freud, and the models range from actresses Dakota Fanning and Nicole Kidman to Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova.

100% of the proceeds will go to Women for Women International, a non-profit organization that supports female war survivors.

The Victoria & Albert Museum Opens Ticket Sales For Frida Kahlo

London’s V&A Museum is opening ticket sales this Women’s Day for a special Frida Kahlo exhibition that will take place in June. Titled “Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up,” the show will present personal artifacts and clothing belonging to the Mexican artist and feminist icon, giving viewers new perspectives on Kahlo’s life and work through an array of belongings never before seen outside of Mexico in the 50 years since the artist’s death.

Sofía Vergara Launches ‘Empowered By Business’ Campaign

The Modern Family star plans to unveil her campaign, “Empowered By Business,” today in honor of Women’s Day.
